Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has restated his administration’s commitment to peace and security, emphasizing that political rallies will not be permitted to compromise the state’s stability, SAVANNAH NEWSNOW REPORTS.
Governor Diri stated at the 158th State Executive Council meeting in Yenagoa on Wednesday that while his government respects constitutional rights, it would be unwise to hold rallies amid ongoing efforts to restore calm in neighboring Rivers State.
Governor Diri responded to plans by supporters of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to hold a rally in Bayelsa, citing concerns that unrest in the state could impact Bayelsa due to the recent state of emergency in Rivers.
“A state of emergency has been imposed in Rivers State. President Bola Tinubu has the power to do so. All we can do from our end is to see how we can bring lasting peace to Rivers State,” Diri said.
“Bayelsa and Rivers are sister states, and whatever happens there has some degree of effect on our state. And then some persons say they want to hold a mega rally here. We are not yet in a political season. As the chief security officer of the state, I have a duty to ensure that no one disrupts the peace and security of this state.”
Governor Diri emphasized the importance of following due process for public gatherings, citing the example of First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, who notified the state government of her visit on Thursday.
He urged Bayelsans to warmly receive the First Lady while maintaining order and stability.
