Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned President Bola Tinubu for remaining silent on the ongoing crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly, describing it as a tacit endorsement of anti-democratic tactics.
In a statement issued on Thursday by his media aide, Paul Ibe, Atiku criticized the use of state-backed security forces and alleged “backdoor tactics” to overturn the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa. Obasa was ousted by a majority of lawmakers but later stormed the Assembly Complex, insisting that he remains the legitimate speaker.
Atiku argued that Tinubu’s refusal to address the situation raises doubts about his commitment to democratic principles. His criticism follows recent allegations by former Kaduna State Governor Nasir el-Rufai, who accused Tinubu of engaging in selective political control.
The former vice president further accused the president of turning Lagos politics into a battle between democratic values and authoritarian strong-arm tactics. He called on Tinubu to publicly denounce any undemocratic actions and ensure that due process is respected.
Atiku stressed that Nigeria’s democracy must be protected and urged citizens to remain vigilant in defending democratic institutions against any form of political manipulation.
