Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, who was removed as Speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly on January 13, 2025, is expected to regain the position.
Obasa’s security details have been reinstated, while those of Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, his former deputy, have been withdrawn.
Meranda made history by becoming the first female to occupy the position after being unanimously elected by the house following her predecessor’s impeachment.
Although she has not officially resigned as Speaker of the House, her fate was allegedly sealed over the weekend by key APC leaders who intervened in the crisis affecting the House of Assembly. Former APC National Chairman Chief Bisi Akande, former Osun State Governor Chief Olusegun Osoba, former Justice Commissioner Dr. Muiz Banire, and members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) and some lawmakers met over the weekend to resolve the crisis.
The fate of Meranda was sealed at the meeting, where she was allegedly asked to give up her seat. Indications suggest that Obasa may return as Speaker, as the leaders’ resolutions largely supported his return.
