The Labour Party (LP) has refuted claims that it has zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to the South-East, dismissing reports circulating in the media. In a statement, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, clarified that remarks attributed to LP National Chairman Julius Abure were misinterpreted.
According to Ifoh, the Labour Party remains a national political platform with a broad support base across the country, making the issue of zoning irrelevant. He explained that Abure’s comments were merely an encouragement for South-East members to strengthen alliances with other regions to enhance their political prospects. He cited the Yoruba political bloc’s success through strategic realignments as an example.
The Labour Party’s constitution does not support zoning, and all candidates must emerge through a competitive and democratic process. Ifoh highlighted the party’s achievements in the 2023 general elections, where it secured seats in both northern and southern states, and reaffirmed LP’s commitment to expanding its influence in future elections.
This clarification comes amid ongoing political speculation following the 2023 presidential election, where LP’s candidate, Peter Obi, finished third behind Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party and eventual winner, Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress.
