President Bola Tinubu has called on the people of Ogoniland to come together in reconciliation and unity, reiterating his administration’s dedication to advancing peace, justice, and sustainable development in the region, SAVANNAH NEWSNOW REPORTS.
Tinubu urged for a resolution during a meeting at the State House with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, former Governor Nyesom Wike, and other Ogoni leaders, focusing on long-standing grievances, environmental restoration, and socio-economic progress.
“We cannot rewrite history, but we can correct the anomalies of the past,” Tinubu stated, emphasizing the need for healing. “We cannot heal the wounds if we continue to be angry. We must build mutual trust, return home, consult broadly, and embrace one another. This trip must be worthwhile by bringing peace, development, and a clean environment back to Ogoniland.”
Tinubu demonstrated his commitment to the cause by assigning National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu to lead further negotiations, promoting inclusivity and cooperation among stakeholders.
The President emphasized trust, cooperation, and comprehensive engagement as essential elements for addressing challenges and achieving lasting progress in the region.
The President reflected on his historical connections with Ogoni activists, recalling that many of their sons were his comrades in the fight against military dictatorship.
He expressed his commitment to honouring the memory of fallen heroes, ensuring their sacrifices were not in vain.
Governor Fubara thanked Tinubu for his support, emphasizing the importance of resuming oil production in Ogoniland.
He confirmed the delegation’s readiness to implement the President’s directives and collaborate with relevant parties to promote peace and economic revitalization.
Ribadu praised the Ogoni leaders for choosing dialogue and pledged full cooperation in pursuing peace and environmental sustainability, expressing optimism that their constructive engagement would yield transformative outcomes for the region.
