Fouad Oki, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, has disclosed that President Bola Tinubu was informed about and played a role in the events that led to the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa, the former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, SAVANNAH NEWSNOW REPORTS.
Oki revealed this during his appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he stated that Tinubu intervened in the growing tensions in the Assembly, following concerns raised by the Governor’s Advisory Council about Obasa’s leadership style and alleged financial mismanagement.
“Before the president came home, this issue had been lingering,” Oki stated. “In the wisdom of members of the Governor’s Advisory Council, the president’s attention was called. As a father and leader, he convened a meeting to address the concerns. Unfortunately, he witnessed Obasa’s recalcitrance firsthand, which I believe was the final straw.”
Following allegations of multiple financial infractions, including the alleged misappropriation of ₦17 billion for the construction of the Assembly’s gate and ₦200 million for a thanksgiving service, Obasa was impeached by lawmakers on Monday, bringing an end to his tenure amidst claims of fraud and abuse of office.
Hon. Mojisola Meranda, the former deputy speaker, was subsequently elected as the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, marking a historic shift in leadership. Oki described the impeachment as “long overdue,” emphasizing the importance of accountability in governance.
He stated that “recalcitrance and leadership do not mix,” and noted that the president recognized this and the Assembly acted accordingly.
