Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation at a news conference on Monday, according to a senior government source, SAVANNAH NEWSNOW REPORTS.
Trudeau, facing his worst political crisis since becoming premier in 2015, is scheduled to address reporters at 10:45 am (1545 GMT).
A government source revealed to AFP that Trudeau has decided to step down, although the exact timing is still unclear.
Trudeau’s popularity plummeted after Chrystia Freeland, his former finance minister and deputy prime minister, unexpectedly resigned in December.
Freeland resigned with a scathing letter, criticizing Trudeau for prioritizing political gimmicks, such as a costly Christmas tax holiday, over stabilizing Canada’s finances amid a potential trade war with the US, where incoming President Donald Trump has threatened a 25 percent tariff on Canadian imports, which could severely impact Canada’s economy.
