On Friday, the Supreme Court invalidated the National Lottery Act of 2005, which was established by the National Assembly, NEWSNOW NEWSNOW REPORTS.
The court’s unanimous decision, made by a panel of seven Justices, stated that the National Assembly lacked the authority to legislate on lottery and gaming matters, as this power is exclusively held by the state Houses of Assembly.
The court, led by Justice Mohammed Idris, ruled that the National Lottery Act 2005 should cease to be enforced in all states except the Federal Capital Territory, where the National Assembly retains legislative power.
This judgment was in response to a lawsuit filed in 2008 by Lagos and other states challenging the Federal Government’s right to oversee lottery and gaming activities nationwide.
