The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has hit back at Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Governor of Kano State and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), calling him an insignificant and failed politician.
This came after Kwankwaso claimed during a speech at the inauguration of a newly renovated NNPP office in Katsina State that the PDP has lost relevance in Nigeria.
He stated that his departure from the party marked the end of its influence. “The PDP is dead because we left the party. We saw them drifting off track, so we decided to leave,” Kwankwaso remarked.
In response, the PDP, through its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, released a statement on Sunday, criticizing Kwankwaso’s remarks and accusing him of selfishness.
The party questioned his relevance in national politics, stating that his leadership of the NNPP, which only controls one state, reflects his limited influence.
The statement read, “Kwankwaso is insignificant in the Nigerian political landscape today, given that he is struggling to lead the NNPP, a party that holds sway in just one state. It is baffling that someone with such limited political clout would declare a party like the PDP, which has 13 governors, numerous Senators, and House of Representatives members, as ‘dead.’”
The PDP further accused Kwankwaso of being self-centered, pointing out that many of his political achievements were made during his time in the PDP.
“At a time when Nigerians, including those in Kano, are suffering from severe hardship due to the policies of the ruling APC, Kwankwaso’s only concern is his dream of becoming President. This shows a level of selfishness and insensitivity that is troubling,” the statement added.
The PDP concluded by saying they would not engage further with Kwankwaso on the matter, emphasizing that any political relevance he once had was due to his affiliation with the PDP.
