The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC in the Sankara area of Ukum Local Government Area (LGA) in Benue State has been burnt down by angry youths of the community.
The ugly incident happened during a protests by some angry youths in the community against the activities of bandits.
This was made known in a statement issued and signed by the INEC National Commissioner, Sam Olumekun on Wednesday.
Olumekun confirmed the destruction of the office.
In the statement, the INEC building suffered extensive damage. Office furniture, 10 electric generators, 300 ballot boxes, and 270 voting cubicles were among the items destroyed in the attack.
Security agencies have been alerted and have deployed personnel to the area in response to the incident. The situation underscores ongoing security challenges in some communities, prompting local protests against insecurity and related issues affecting the region.
