Canada based human rights activist, Olujimi Adekanle popularly known as JAF, has condemned the raid on some nightclubs and lounges in the Akure the Ondo State capital, in the early hours of Saturday
The EFCC had, in the dead of Saturday night, raided several night clubs in Akure, labelling them internet fraudsters (Yahoo Boys) after seizing their mobile phones and laptops.
In a press release issued and signed by Olujimi Adekanle, he lamented how the anti-graft agency would be carrying out its job without adhering to due process and rule of law.
“As a statutory agency birthed by an Act of Parliament in a democracy, we had expected the EFCC to explore civil means of addressing perceived infraction.
“It is worrisome if our country has degenerated to a level where innocent citizens are being harassed, intimidated and framed up on daily basis, while criminals and perpetrators of other heinous activities walk about freely.
“From what I heard from different sources, many of those arrested are not a Yahoo Yahoo person after they had been beaten like common criminals by the EFCC officers.
“With the manner the latest raid was carried out, the probability is high that the majority of those nabbed would be mere revellers. I urge Federal Government to check excesses of the operatives from Ibadan zonal office of the EFCC.”
Adekanle called on the international community to pay attention to the on-going barbaric and irresponsible act being perpetrated by security agencies in Nigeria.
