3 lawmakers dump LP for PDP, give reason

In a significant political development in Enugu State, three lawmakers who were elected under the Labour Party have defected to the Peoples Democratic Party, citing Governor Peter Mbah’s performance and leadership as the reason.

The defectors comprise two members of the House of Representatives – Dennis Agbo and Chidi Obetta – as well as Malachy Onyechi, a member of the Enugu State House of Assembly.

Lawmakers were formally welcomed at the PDP Secretariat in Enugu by state party chairman Dr. Martin Chukwunwike, who was accompanied by other key stakeholders.

Agbo stated during the defection ceremony that their departure from the Labour Party signifies the collapse of the party’s political structure in the Enugu North Senatorial District.

He praised Governor Mbah’s governance style as ‘bold, inclusive, and development-driven.’ Obetta echoed this sentiment, commending the governor’s achievements in education, healthcare, security, and infrastructure, which inspired their decision to join the PDP and support Mbah’s re-election bid in 2027.

The Labour Party’s influence in Enugu, particularly in areas where it made significant gains in the last general election, has been dealt a blow by the defection.
